My grandfather was well known in this area for his blacksmith skills as well as his hunting knife making when I was about 10 I would say I begged him to build me one. I looked threw lots of his knife books and picked out the shape I wanted and me and him sketched out how we wanted it to look. I would help him in the forage and he would get me to do alot of the work...I got to pick the handle and guard we worked together and he let me do as much as I could without him taking over LOL we never really gave it a lot of time in the finishing department as I suspect he thought I would ruin it and I think he kinda made it to keep me quite LOL not long after he had a stroke and was still tinkering around but nothing like before and as the years went his age really took affect. I hadn't used this knife in years and had set in closet at mom and dads probably since the summer it had made. I dug it out and took it to one of my grandfathers best friends who use to work with him and still makes knifes today. I had him made a sheath and all so ad my grandfathers and my name on the blade along with cleaning it up. this knife may not be the best but it holds alot of meaning to me and will be carrying it on my moose hunt this fall along with every other time I will be going hunting

nice knife, great story to go with it. my grandfather's been into wood working his whole life, he used to do alot of carvings of ducks and loons and stuff like that and man they looked so real, he's made a nice mantle for me and the wife and a nice toy box for my oldest girl and they're things that we'll always have. I always wanted to go up and spend a week with him and get him to teach me some things as I've always wanted to get into the hobby and now that I've started in carpentry I'm sure it would of helped alot, and just for the quality time but just never made the time to go. probably about 2 years ago or so his memory started to let go and he's pretty much lost his balance, they believe it's early alzheimer's or dementia starting, he's not able to use the tools anymore and with his balance and mind starting to be off no one wants him to hurt himself with it so I guess I missed my chance.
Just wish I'd of made the time to do something like you have, something like that is special

Yes,thats a great knife ,you can't buy a knife like that, its worth more than any amount of money something like that.I have 3-4 knives from Russell's shop, one i always carry is my grand dads knife that was passed down to my dad,and when he passed it was left to me,I don't go hunting without it on me.
I have a favorite hunting knife Russell made me years ago,its done a fair amount of bears and deer since, and holds a edge real good.I always like handmade knives over store bought stuff. That knife should be great on that moose this fall Justin!

Your grandfather actually knew how to make a gut hook that worked Justin,Lots of knives have gut hooks but the shape of the blade is all wrong, that one has the right grind on the tip to make the hook cut right when you draw it towards you while the blade is upside down.I would say he made that for hunting and not decoration, better get it dirty this fall.LOL
