Justin already posted that I got my first deer with a bow... but I wanted to share my side of the story... so here we go...
I'd been getting pictures of a few deer, but only one consistently during daylight hours. It was a small 4 point that had tall spikes with hookers off the back. I didn't care how big he was..... just that he had horns and he was coming during daylight hours which made him a great candidate as my first deer with a bow. ;D
Between my already busy schedule, Justin talking about leaving for Newfoundland a few different days and taking my firearms course 3 nights this week during what should have been evening hunting hours, I kept missing this guy at my stand.
On Wednesday, I never had class, so I went to the stand that morning and only sat there 2 hours when Justin said he was leaving for Newfoundland. Wanting to spend some time with him before he left, I climbed down and checked my trail camera to see exactly how many pictures were on it. 48. Okay, good enough, remember that # I said...
Went home to send Justin off for his moose hunt and found out he wasn't leaving that day, that he would be leaving Thursday. Needless to say I wasn't happy about getting out of the stand for nothing.
Fast forward to 3pm and I head back to the stand. Check my trail camera again and still have 48 pictures.... GREAT, he hadn't been there that morning anyway. Whew! My chances were good for him to show up that evening.
Around 5.... I hear what sounds like a bulldozer coming through the woods, get everything ready..... when out steps a monster of a porcupine. ;D I got nerved up for THAT to step out? ;D
7pm rolls around and I know he should be on his way... time is ticking by slower than slow.
7:23pm...... I hear a little noise and out steps Mr. 4 point! He puts his head down to start feeding on apples & carrots, so I go to draw my bow back. I literally STRUGGLED to pull it back. My arms felt numb/weak/froze stiff - I was totally worked up. ;D Somehow I managed to get it back, line him up with my 20 yard pin and let 'er fly!
*THWACK!* I see my arrow sticking out of his shoulder (uh oh, I think!), he kicks up in the air like a bucking bronco and takes off like a bullet through the brush. I can see the trees shaking violently and then complete silence. He's DOWN! Never ran more than 30 yards - I absolutely couldn't believe it!
I got on the phone and voice messaged Justin and told him to come help! So he and a buddy of ours gathered up flashlights, knives & the 4 wheeler and were to me at my stand in less than 20 minutes of shooting the deer.
We found blood right away..... and walked to where I heard the deer last when Justin announced, "here he is!" .......
...... and suddenly my knees went weak... I tripped over a log and down I went into the bushes flat on my ass, bow in hand. I laid back in the brush for a bit and just stayed there for a sec while looking up to the stars in the sky. I just flat out couldn't believe I had actually accomplished my dream to shoot a deer (buck nonetheless!) with a bow.
The entire moment was completely surreal and is something I'll never forget the rest of my life.
My shot was a tad farther forward than I would have liked, but my NAP Thunderhead Edge combined with a 54 lb. draw weight had no trouble busting through his shoulder, breaking 2 ribs, through both lungs and nearly coming out the other side.
Many thanks go out to first and foremost my Dad for introducing me to the outdoors when I was a little girl and showing me the ways of the woods.
To my dear husband, Justin for buying this bow for me Christmas 2010 and having the patience to teach me how to shoot. (Don't punch the trigger!!) ;D
Lastly, Scott for setting me up with a well tuned bow, arrows & broadheads that laid the smackdown on my first ever deer with a bow!
